Löyly steam rising from sauna stones

Löyly — The soul of the sauna. There is no perfectly translatable word for the Finnish word löyly. It is the steam that rises when you pour water on the hot stones of the sauna stove. But it is also more than that.

Löyly is the feeling. The warmth that envelops you. The scent of birchwood and herbs. The sound of hissing water. The moment when everyone in the sauna closes their eyes at the same time.

How to use löyly:

  1. Heat your sauna to 70-90 degrees Celsius
  2. Add water to the ladle — or use a Löyly Sachet
  3. Pour slowly over the stones
  4. Breathe in deeply through the nose
  5. Wait. Feel. Repeat.
